If you’re a conservative politician who wants to make the leap from a state-level office like governor to something bigger, nothing will raise your national profile more effectively than supporting a piece of hateful legislation.
I don’t know if it’s the same in other countries, but it happens way too fucking often in the United States.
So often, in fact, that it’s difficult to tell how many of these conservative politicians are backing hateful legislation out of genuine conviction, and which ones are doing it solely for political gain. Both are loathsome, but there’s something particularly repulsive about the thought of a politician putting already vulnerable groups at even greater risk just to get mentioned more frequently by the national news media.
That’s where “Prevailing Winds” came from. I wrote it about a pair of conservative governors who’ve been in the news a lot over the last year: Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott.
DeSantis made a name for himself in Florida for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic - this has included a number of executive orders prohibiting any sort of mitigation protocols like schools requiring students to wear masks or businesses requiring proof of vaccination for entry.
More recently, he’s been in the news for his support of the Parental Rights in Education bill, more commonly called the “Don’t Say Gay” bill because it prohibits any discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity in K – 3rd grade classrooms, and his bizarre battle with Disney – one of the largest employers in the state – over their opposition to the law.
He’s also convinced the Florida legislature to allow him to redraw the state’s map of congressional districts. If they approve his map, two predominantly African American districts will be eliminated.
Greg Abbott has also banned any publicly funded agency or organization in Texas from requiring proof of vaccination, and he’s signed an executive order banning masking in schools as well. He also signed the Texas Heartbeat Act, which bans abortions after a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which usually occurs around six weeks, and allows members of the public to sue anyone who illegally performs or facilitates an abortion.
He’s been in headlines most recently for imposing stricter ‘safety inspections’ on trucks crossing into the US from Mexico in order to stop illegal drugs or migrants from being smuggled into Texas. The stricter inspections lasted for eight days and turned up no contraband whatsoever - the increased wait time to cross the border, however, caused BILLIONS of dollars’ worth of goods to spoil at a time when food prices are already high due to supply chain issues.
In the chorus, I’m speaking (shrieking?) directly to them.
